Overview

Beyond the fact that he settled on the North Fork of the Shenandoah in Augusta County, VA, we know very little about this Robert Colville, as he does not appear in later records of Augusta County. He may be the same person as the Robert Colville who appears in the 1764 Rent Rolls for Frederick County, along with Andrew, James, Joseph, and Samuel Colvill. The latter Colvill's are known to be kinsmen of each other, based on the wills of 'James Colville (d 1777|1778), his sons Joseph (d. 1757|1758), and John Colville (d1802|1803)[1] It is not unreasonable to think that Robert of the Augusta land record is a kinsmen of these Colvills and has left Augusta during the French and Indian War, settling near his kinsmen in Frederick County. Since we have no further record for him, either in Augusta or Frederick, its hard to suggest either his fate, or his relationship to the other Colville's in the area. It this is the case it seems unlikely that he would be another son of James as he initially settled some distance from them. He might be a brother of James, but our date is far too sparse to reach any conclusions on this.

Abstract of will of James Colville, written 1777, probated 1778, citing Will Book 4:357G

Signed James COLVILL in the presence of Robert Henning, Samuel Vance, James Timrall and Daniel McCAULEY.

  1. "d1802|1803" is a convention for "will written in 1802 and probated in 1803. Of the persons mentioned in the Rent Roll Samuel is believed (arguably) to be the son of James. The Joseph and Andrew mentioned in the rent rolls are the sons of Joseph, James' son who died 1757|58 prior to the recordation of the rent roll in 1764.
