Descendants of Richard PILSON

First Generation

1. Richard PILSON died after 1776. Richard came to Augusta Co. VA prior to 1745. He is first listed in Augusta Co. records with the baptism of two of his children in 1747 and 1748. He is listed as purchasing 330 acres in 1753 from William Beverley. In 1764, he moved across the mountain to Albemarle County, VA where he purchased 224 acres from John Kinkaid. In 1776, he sold the last of his property in Augusta Co., VA to George Caldwell. He had the following children:

+ 3 M ii. Samuel PILSON was born 1739 and died about 1823.

+ 4 M iii. Richard PILSON was born about 1745 and died about 1799.

+ 5 F iv. Mary PILSON was born about 1747 and died about 1789.

Second Generation

2. William PILSON died after 1812. William was from Augusta County, VA. William married (1) Esther TURNER. They had the following children:

+ 7 M i. Richard "Dicky" William PILSON was born 1780 and died 24 Feb 1859.

3. Samuel PILSON was born 1739. He died about 1823. Samuel, at age 68, along with some of his family moved to Adams Co., Ohio in 1807. Samuel married (1) Mary HUTCHINSON. They had the following children:

9 M ii. George PILSON. George and Elizabeth had five children. George married (1) Elizabeth THOMPSON, daughter of Matthew THOMPSON.

10 M iii. John PILSON. John lived in Albemarle County, Virginia where he was a magistrate and operated a store. He did not marry.

11 F iv. Eleanor PILSON. Eleanor, along with her father and other family members moved to Adams Co., Ohio in 1807.

Samuel also married (2) Polly Jane WRIGHT. They had the following children:

12 M v. William PILSON died in OH. William moved to Adams Co., Ohio along with his father and other family members in 1807.

4. Richard PILSON was born about 1745 in Augusta Co., VA and was christened 1747 in Tinkling Spring, Church, Augusta Co., VA. He died about 1799. About 1764 Richard and his wife moved to Pittsylvania County, Virginia where they lived for about 12 years. In 1776 they sold this land and moved to Patrick County, VA. They purchased land on Smith River near Woolwine, Virginia. Richard married (1) Elizabeth ___. They had the following children:

Hi Lynn, I would like to offer the information I have; the Richard Pilson everyone seems to have descended from, born abt. 1722 in No. Ireland, was married 1740 in Charlosttesville, Albemarle VA, to someone whom I believe to be named Esther. I'm still trying to verify this. They had the following children: Samuel, born 1739, died 1823; Mary, born 1742, died 11-29-1789; Richard Jr., born abt 1745, married Elizabeth Frances Turner in 1765, VA; Robert (my line) b. abt. 1749, married 1782 to an Agnes McClure, died abt 1810; and William b. 1752, d. aft. 1812. Richard Jr. and Elizabeth had Richard III, b. 5-8-1769 in Augusta, VA, married Frances "Fanny" Denney, 12-25-1794. I believe he had two wives, though I know nothing yet of the other; Frances was born 6-15-1775. They had the following children: James, b. 11-12-1795, Betsy, b. 6-22-1797 and Esther, b. 2-8-1800 in KY, married 1-5-1816 to Dr. George M. Rheal (sp Real?). Dr. Rheal was b. 1793 in VA. They had at least one daughter, Nancy M. Real (spelling?), and Esther died 1851 in Bledsoe, TN. This is the only information I have accumulated up to this point, as I have just started, and I am not descended from the "Richards", other than the one born abt 1722 in Ireland. By the way, I have unverified information that his parents' names were Arthur Pilson of Ulster, IR, and Jane Kibon, and they were married 1-24-1725 in Downpatrick, IR. I'm sorry that this is so lengthy, and that it is in paragraph, not outline, form, but I'm still new at this, and haven't figured out a way to include all families and respective siblings in an outline form!!    It is probable that the Pilson family originally belonged to Augusta County. In 1760 Richard of that name purchased from Jean Kincaid two hundred and twenty-four acres lying at the foot of the Blue Ridge. He appears to have died not long after, and the property descended to his son Samuel. In 1778 Samuel was living in Augusta, and in that year sold the land to William Pilson. William sold it to Nathaniel Harlow in 1783, and five years later it was the first purchase of John Dettor, of York County, Pennsylvania. It is likely that Samuel and William were brothers, and that Mary Pilson, who became the wife of William Wallace in 1771, was their sister.
   
   John Pilson next appears, and was the son of Samuel. He was a man of sterling character, sincere piety, and the strictest integrity. He carried on the mercantile business in parnership with his cousin William Wallace until the death of William in 1809, and then conducted it alone for many years. The store stood on the old Staunton Road on the north side of the branch, opposite the house now owned by Rev. Dabney Davis. He invested the earnings of his business in the old Hardin property, which in 1837 he sold to Thomas C. Bowen. He was appointed a magistract in 1824 and served for a time as ruling elder in the Mountain Plains Church. He never married, but was once engaged to his cousin Polly Wallace. Their union being opposed by friends because of relationship, they quietly acquiesced, but withal still loved and lived in each other's eyes until her death in 1845; and to her memory he remained a constant until his own death, which occurred ten years later. A nephew, Matthew Pilson, from Augusta County, was for some years an assistant in the store. After John's death he returned to Augusta, where he died not long ago at an advanced age.
