Rachel Bigg's origins have yet to be established. Her first confirmed sighting is on Christmas Day 1754 when she married Joseph Alce at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire. They went on to have eight children baptised at Wheathampstead between 1755 and 1777. Their eldest son died aged thirteen in 1769.

In 1771 the family obtained a settlement certificate allowing them to live in the neighbouring parish of Harpenden.

Rachel died in 1787, being buried at Wheathampstead on 11th August 1787. She was described as a pauper. Joseph survived her by sixteen years and went on to remarry a few months after her death.
