Rachel Alce was born on 17th September 1768 and baptised later that month at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire. She was the daughter of Rachel Alce, formerly Bigg, and her husband Joseph Alce, a labourer.

In 1771 the family obtained a settlement certificate which allowed them to live in the neighbouring parish of Harpenden. Rachel has yet to be traced after 1771.
