Jane Alce was born on 6th April 1771 and baptised later that month at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire. She was the daughter of Rachel Alce, formerly Bigg, and her husband Joseph Alce, a labourer.

Later that year the family obtained a settlement certificate to allow them to live in the neighbouring parish of Harpenden. Jane has yet to be traced after that.
