Joseph Alce was born on 18th May 1777 and baptised the following month at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire. He was the son of Rachel Alce, formerly Bigg, and her husband Joseph Alce, a labourer.

Young Joseph has yet to be traced after his baptism.

The original parish records being faded where the surname should be, it is not clear whether the transcript was able is based on a reading of the faded section or on the Bishop's Transcript.
