Joseph Alce was born on 30th August 1755 and baptised the following month at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire. He was the eldest son of Rachel Alce, formerly Bigg, and her husband Joseph Alce, a labourer. Joseph died when he was only thirteen years old, being buried at Wheathampstead on 9th July 1769.
