Ellen Alce was born on 13th January 1766 and baptised later that month at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire. She was the daughter of Rachel Alce, formerly Bigg, and her husband Joseph Alce, a labourer.

In 1771 the family obtained a settlement certificate to allow them to live in the neighbouring parish of Harpenden.

On 7th September 1786, aged 20, Ellen married William Birch back at Wheathampstead. They have yet to be traced after their marriage.
