Edward Alce was born on 2nd March 1763 and baptised later that month at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire. He was the son of Rachel Alce, formerly Bigg, and her husband Joseph Alce, a labourer.

In 1771 the family obtained a settlement certificate allowing them to live in the neighbouring parish of Harpenden. Edward has yet to be traced after 1771.
