James Alce was born on 16th October 1759 and baptised two weeks later at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire, son of Rachel Alce, formerly Bigg, and her husband Joseph Alce, a labourer.

In 1771 the family obtained a settlement certificate allowing them to live in the neighbouring parish of Harpenden. James has yet to be traced after 1771.

Births and Baptizms from Lady Day 1760 to L. Day 1761 / James Son of Joseph Alce & Rachel his Wife Born Oct[obe]r 16 Bapt[ised] November 9

The 1760 entry in the Bishop's Transcript does not appear in the Parish Register. Given the day and month of birth are the same and there does not appear to have been a burial of a James Alce between the two, it is considered more likely that an error in the record keeping has led to the one year discrepancy between the Parish Register and the Bishop's Transcript than there having been two James Alces born exactly a year apart.
