BIOGRAPHY: Ole's story

BIOGRAPHY: Ole K Olson was born October 9,1872, the first child of Kittel and Gunhild Olson .He was born in Madison Township, Iowa and baptized there in the Madison Church on March 30,1873.When Ole was fiveyears old his family left Iowa and headed to Stony Brook Township tohomestead. He was 23 years old when his mother passed away. A young girl named Marie Wilhelmin Chistofferson came to look after the younger Olson children and Ole and her married two years later. Marie was called Mary Simonson, daughter of Simon Christofferson and Karoline Sorensdatter. Ole used the name Kittelson for a few years.Ole farmed south of Wendell, in Elbow Lake Township. The land was owned by Edward Mobraaten. Ole and Mary had eleven children Carl Severin in 1897, Clifford George in1900.Hilma Josefine in 1902 and Agnes Elenor in 1904.The next daughter was Mabel Oline in 1905 and son Leonard Alfred in 1909. The next three children were sons Julean Raynard in 1910, Arvil Walter in 1913 andKenneth Joseph in 1916.The last two were daughters Idella May in 1919 and Florence Opal in 1921. Della his daughter remembers the first house Oleand Mary lived in was called the "gravel ridge house" it would have been located on the shore of Lake Aggasize. According to the Wendell Tribune of Oct. 24th 1919. Ole Olson purchased what was known as the "Irelandplace". This could be the house they lived in that was in section 4 of Elbow Lake Twp. This is the house youngest daughter Florence grew up in. It was very small and run down. In 1939 Ole bought a farm in section 16 of Stony Brook Twp. this was 80 acres and adjoining Lightning Lake. Their house on this farm was quite large, two stories and probably the nicest one they lived in. Florence was the only child left at home by this time. She married Robert Spencer that same year and they all lived in that house. Ole was a tall and handsome man. He had blue eyes and redish brown hair. His beard was red. He was a stern parent and Della can remember the nasty pinch he used on the back of her neck if she was misbehaving.By the time Florence came along, the 11th child, he must have mellowed. Florence doesn't remember him getting after her. He was probably wore out by then. They raised all kinds of animals, many of them helped feed this big family. They had cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, sheep, ducks and horses. Ole raised fine horses and sold them. He also sold cattle. Ole chewed tobacco and smoked a pipe. It was plug tobacco and had a small silver horse shoe on the plug. Della remembers collecting the little horseshoes. He also was a coffee slurper. He made a lot of noise when he slurped his coffee and Florence couldn't stand the noise. It bothered her so much she would crawl under a chair and cover her ears. Ole had a threshing machine with some other farmers. They went from Farm to farm and did the threshing. One day it was very hot and the men had some home brew beer in the afternoon. Ole never drank much but on that day he must have had a little more than he was used to. A combination of hot weather and beer made him sleepy and he crawled under one of the wagons and fell asleep. Apparently he slept pretty hard because he was suppose to go to a school board meeting but never got there. I wonder what Grandma had to say about that. During threshing, the women and I bet the kids had to make the lunches and meals and bring them to the field for the men. It would have been a lot of men to cook for. Gramdma Mary became very crippled up with arthritis. Grandpa Ole tookcare of her, but cooking and cleaning was done by the children. When they moved to the farm by Lightning Lake, Grampa was still doing some farming, but Florence and Robert were doing most of the work outside so Grampa could care for Gramma. Gramma would get fabric pieces free and also order them. From these she made a lot of quilts. May 15th 1945 Ole suffered a stroke at home. He was taken to St. Luke'shospital in Fergus Falls. He died later that day.
