BIOGRAPHY: Martin Olson was the fifth child born to Kittel and GunhildOlson. He was born July 4th 1879 and baptized at West Elbow Lake LutheranChurch on August 24th 1879.Martin grew up on the Olson homestead near thetown of Wendell, Minnesota. He lost his mother Gunhild at the age ofsixteen. Martin worked on his father's farm and met his future wife whenhis father Kittel returned home from Sigdal, Norway with two youngladies. Ottila Simonson and Martin Olson married in Elbow Lake onDecember 5th 1907 with Sophia Olson and Elmer Samuelson as theirwitnesses. Martin and Ottila lived on a farm three miles south of Wendellin Hereford. Their first born was a son Russell Morris born June 6th1908, then a daughter Pearl Mildred born November 16, 1909.In the Wendellnews of 1919 it tells that Martin's brother Severin and wife Annette wereliving with the Martin Olsons up to the birth of their daughter Arlene.In October of 1919 they rented the HC Kersten Farm. On August 27th 1920Mrs. Ottila Olson died after an illness of several months. She hadstepped on a nail and contracted blood poisoning. Ottila was verymusical and talented also in handiwork. After Ottila died, Russell, then twelve, and Pearl, about eleven, wereleft with their father. One day a visitor came and found Martin cooking moonshine. Martin was not a drinker but it is believed he made it to make money. Kittel Olson is said to have been unhappy with Martin's raising the children and after speaking to son Olaus, Martin and children movedto South Dakota to Olaus's farm. Pearl married Peter Peterson and lived in Rosholt, South Dakota. Russell married Doris McKee, January 19th 1933. Russell and Doris had three children. Dorothy in 1934 and twins Darla and Darrell in 1936. Peter andPearl adopted a son Roger in 1934. Martin Olson died October 17 1945 in Aberdeen, South Dakota at age 66.
