Luke Sweeney was born on 18th November 1862 at Sorbie in Wigtownshire, Scotland. He was the son of Mary Sweeney, formerly Kilcawley, and her husband Michael Sweeney, an agricultural labourer, who had come over from Ireland in the wake of the Potato Famine. The 1871 census finds Luke living with his parents and siblings at Sorbie.
By 1881 Luke had left home and was working as a farm servant at Whithorn, the parish to the south of Sorbie. When Luke's father Michael died in 1883, Luke acted as the informant for the death.
In 1888 Luke married Annie Murphy from Kirkcudbright. They married in Kirkcudbright, but then moved to Achie Cothouse in the parish of Kells, on the edge of the town of New Galloway. Luke's mother Mary lived with them there for a time before her death in 1889. The 1891 census finds them still there. By 1895 they had moved to Balmaclellan, where the 1901 census finds them living at Cassenvey Cottage. Some time between between 1901 and 1903 they moved to the Corsock area (which straddled the parishes of Parton, Kirkpatrick Durham and Balmaclellan). The 1911 census finds them living at Upper Barr in the Kirkpatrick Durham section of Corsock.
Luke died on 5th December 1935 at Springholm in the parish of Urr. He was 73. Annie survived him by about five years and died in 1940.
