Annie Murphy was born on 18th March 1863 in the town of Kirkcudbright, daughter of John Murphy and Agnes Farrell. She appears in the 1871 census living with her parents and siblings at Townend in Kirkcudbright. By 1881 she was working as a domestic servant at Tongland. In 1886 Annie had a daughter, called Margaret.

Annie was married in 1888 to an agricultural labourer named Luke Sweeney. Her marriage certificate describes her as a cook. They appear to have had five children together, whilst Annie's daughter Margaret also took the name Sweeney.

Shortly after their marriage they moved to the parish of Kells, living at Achie Cothouse, just outside the small town of New Galloway. Luke's mother lived with them there for a time before her death in 1889. The 1891 census finds Annie and Luke and their children still living there. By 1895 they had moved to Balmaclellan, where the 1901 census finds them living at Cassenvey Cottage. Some time between between 1901 and 1903 they moved to the Corsock area (which straddled the parishes of Parton, Kirkpatrick Durham and Balmaclellan). The 1911 census finds them living at Upper Barr in the Kirkpatrick Durham section of Corsock.

Luke died in 1935 at Springholm in the parish of Urr. Annie survived him by about five years and died on 24th January 1940, also at Springholm. She was 76.
