Margaret Murphy was born on 19th June 1886 at Kirkcudbright, daughter of a domestic servant named Annie Murphy. When Margaret was two years old her mother married an agricultural labourer named Luke Sweeney. The 1891 census finds Margaret described as Maggie Sweeney, living with her mother and stepfather at Achie Cothouse in the parish of Kells, on the edge of the town of New Galloway.

Margaret was married in 1909 in the Corsock area to an agricultural labourer named Robert McQueen. They had at least one son. Margaret outlived Robert, being described as a widow when she died.

Margaret died on 1st July 1944, aged 58.
