Andrew Sweeney was born in 1895 at Balmaclellan in Kirkcudbrightshire, son of Annie Sweeney, formerly Murphy, and her husband Luke Sweeney, an agricultural labourer. Andrew appears in the 1901 census living with his parents and siblings at Cassenvey Cottage in Balmaclellan.

Andrew died as a young man when he was only 27 years old, on 4th December 1922 at Ernminzie, in Crossmichael, where he was living with his parents. He had been suffering with diabetes.
