James Sweeney was born on 9th February 1860 at Sorbie in Wigtownshire, son of Mary Sweeney, formerly Kilcawley, and her husband Michael Sweeney, an agricultural labourer. James appears in the 1861 census living with his parents and siblings at Sorbie.

Sadly James died when he was only six years old, at Sorbie on 9th September 1866.
