Andrew Sweeney was born on 19th December 1864 at Sorbie in Wigtownshire. He was the youngest child of an agricultural labourer named Michael Sweeney and his wife Mary Kilcawley. Michael and Mary were both originally from County Sligo, where they had married and had their first few children, before moving to Scotland some time between 1849 and 1851 following the Potato Famine in Ireland, to settle in Sorbie.

Andrew appears at home with his parents in the 1871 census and as a farm servant at nearby Kirkinner in the 1881 census, but has not been definitively located in any subsequent records.

One possibility is that he may have been the 21 year old Andy Sweeney who sailed from London to Brisbane in Australia on the SS Dacca, arriving on 28th December 1883. However, there is insufficient evidence to be sure of this.
