Facts and Events
Joseph Wild was baptised on 10th December 1753 at Owthorpe in Nottinghamshire, son of Mary Wild, formerly Capps, and her husband John Wild, a farmer. Joseph was named in his father's will of 1770 and was the only son to survive his father, although he had many sisters.
On 19th May 1774, aged twenty, Joseph married Elizabeth Mackley at Owthorpe. A few years later, in 1781, Joseph's younger sister Alice would go on to marry Elizabeth's brother, Edward Mackley. Joseph's mother died in 1783.
Joseph and Elizabeth had twelve children baptised at Owthorpe between 1775 and 1799, although five died young. Three of the children died in the space of less than a month between November and December 1793, suggesting an illness in the family.
Elizabeth died in 1802, aged about 45. Joseph survived her by 28 years.
In 1827, Joseph wrote his will, in which he described himself as a farmer. He left the substantial sum of five hundred pounds upon trust for looking after his youngest son, George, which may indicate that George was considered unlikely to be able to support himself. After George's death that money was to be shared between his brothers. Joseph also made provision for two grandchildren, William and Elizabeth Grice, who were the children of Joseph's late daughter Ann, who had died aged 23 in 1819. Joseph's eldest son John was to act as executor and one of the trustees, with the other trustee being Joseph's friend Richard Mackley, who was presumably a relative of his late wife.
Joseph died at the age of 76 and was buried at Owthorpe on 5th February 1830.
