Facts and Events
John Wild's origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is on 15th August 1741 when he married Ann Buck at Radford in Nottinghamshire. They had a daughter baptised at Radford the following year, after which they moved about ten miles west to Ockbrook in Derbyshire, where they had another two daughters baptised in 1744 and 1745.
Some time between 1745 and 1747 the family moved again, this time moving about twenty miles east to Owthorpe in Nottinghamshire. Ann was buried there on 20th October 1747. John was therefore left looking after their three young daughters.
The following year, on 5th July 1748, John married Mary Capps at Owthorpe.
John and Mary went on to have another seven children at Owthorpe between their marriage and 1762, although the eldest two died young.
John's eldest daughter married in 1766 and his first known grandchild was born the following year. He appears to have had three grandchildren born in his lifetime.
John wrote his will on 26th April 1770, when he described himself as a farmer. He left small amounts of money to his three daughters from his first marriage, who were all themselves married by this time and perhaps he had provided for them when they married. He left larger amounts of money for his children with Mary Capps, who were all still under 21. He also left one shilling to a William Buck, who was presumably a relative of John's first wife. The small amount of money left to him may have been a mechanism to prevent a larger claim against the estate being made.
John was buried on 5th June 1770 at Owthorpe. He and Mary had been married for nearly 22 years. Mary survived him by nearly thirteen years.
