Acquisition of Land from Orange County Virginia Records:

• Pages 190-95. 26-27 July 1742. Benjamin Borden of Orange County to Joseph Lapsly of same. Lease and release; for £10.2.10 current money. 338 acres on waters of James River, part of 92,100 acres patin (patented) 6 Nov. 1739... on boath sides of Woods Creek... corner to Samuel Woods land... (signed) Benja. Borden. Wit: Richard Woods, James McDowell, William Woods. 26 Aug. 1742. Acknowledged by Benjamin Borden, Gent. [Orange County Virginia Deed Book 8, Dorman, pg. 79].

• Page 340.--19th June, 1752. James McDowell to Joseph Lapsley, 400 acres. In Forks of James; Woods Creek; Benjamin Borden's line. Teste: William Armstrong, James Lockhart. (Note: this tract of 400 acres is no doubt very close to the land acquired by Joseph Lapsley in 1742, most likely just across the border of the Borden Tract).

• Page 403.--21st August, 1754. Same (From Borden's executors) to Joseph Lapsley, Gent. Benjamin Borden, Jr., had sold to Joseph in his lifetime one acre adjoining said Lapsley's old survey where he now lives; Joseph Lapsley's and John Paxton's old corner by a branch of Wood's Creek.

• Page 38.--3d June, 1766. John Thompson, Sr., to Joseph Lapsley, John Moore, Andrew Hall, John Thompson. Jr., £250, bill sale of cattle and other personalty. Condition is such that whereas John Thompson, Sr., at a court for this county was lately convicted of felony and then bailed to grand jury, and the grantees became surety on the bail bond, now if John makes his appearance this bill to be void. • Vol. 2 - Page ___--Samuel McDowell deposes, in Jessamine County, Kentucky, 17th November, 1806, was not 7 years old when he first knew Solomon Moffett. Solomon was at his father's house the day he set out against the Indians, by whom he was killed, and Moffett was one of his men. One Pickins lived with Moffett. John Patterson was living on the land in 1747. Deponent's father and seven others were killed. Deponent heard that Moffett was living on the place some years before his father was killed, viz: Joseph Lapsley, Richard Woods, Charles Hays, Jacob Anderson, and others who were at the battle when his father was killed. John Patterson's wife was near relative to deponent's uncle Lapsley. Deponent's father settled in Borden's grant in 1737. Deponent was born 27th October, 1735. Moffett claimed by cabin right, and all the best lands wen taken by cabin rights in lifetime of Borden, senior.
