Will Transcript
- In the name of God Amen this Sixth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy one. I John Robertson of the County of Augusta and Colony of Virginia being now sick & weak in body but Perfect in mind and memory thanks be to almighty God who gave it now calling to mind the mortality of my Body and knowing that is is appointed for all men one to die do hereby make my last Will and Testament and first I recommend my sould to god that Gave it and body to the earth to be buried and ____ like & decent Manner at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named and as for what worldly substance it hath pleased God in his Providence to bestow upon me in this life after my just debts and funeral charges ___ and I give and dispose of as followeth:
- Imprimis I give & bequeath to my well beloved Wife one third part of my personal estate & my will and device is that she have the full profits of my land with the free use of the remaining part of my personal estate until my son Alexander Robertson arrive to the age of twenty one years in order to enable her to provide for and educate my children which if found not sufficient I allow here with the consent of other Executors to espend any part of the personal estate I___ possessed of as they shall see necessary for that purpose notwithstanding if she shall think it too great a burden she shall at any time ___ liberty to have one third of the use of the profits of my land for her own proper use until my son arrive to the age above mentioned providing for my children other ways as she and my other Executor shall think most proper and what shall remain of my personal estate at that time I allow to be divided equally amoungst my Six Daughters or as many of them as shall then survive & my land I give and bequeath to my said son Alexr. robertson if he survives to the age aforesaid reserving one third of the profits of it to my beloved wife during her natural life or widowhood provided she remains my widow until that time & if he my son shall not survive that age.
- I allow my Executors to sell my land at the time he would have arrived to that age had he survived & one third of the money arising by such sale I give to my beloved wife provided she is then my widow and the remainder or whole if she is not my widow to be equally divided amongst my then surviving children & I do hereby constitute and appoint my well beloved wife Mary Robertson and my nephew Alexander Robertson (son of my brother Matthew Robertson) Executrix and Executor of this my Last Will and Testament and I do hereby revoke disaunul & disalow of all former and other will of wills by me heretofore made whether by word or writing approving ratifying and confirming this only as my last will and Testament.

- At a Court continued and held for Augusta County August the 21st 1771. This Last Will and Testament of John Robertson dec'd was Proved by the Oaths of the witnesses thereto and Ordered to be Recorded and on the motion of Mary Robertson the Executrix therein named who made oath according to Law Certificate is granted them they having with Securitys entered into & acknowledged have Bond according to Law.

Wife; brother, Oliver Hart; William Hart, son of Nephew John Hart, deceased; nephew, Silas Hough ; nephew, Silas Gilbert; nephew, Silas Hart; nephew, Joseph Hart; nephew, Joseph Gilbert; legatee, Alexander Hart Robertson; legatee, Silas Hart Smith; legatee, Alexander Robertson, son of wife's brother John Robertson, deceased; legatee, James Shanklin; legatee, Baptist Association that for ordinary meets at Philadelphia for education of youths of Baptist denomination who shall appear promising for the ministry, always giving a preference to the descendants of my father's family. Recorded in Rockingham, December, 1795. [Note: this will of Silas Hart, brother-in-law of John Robertson, along with the will above and other records, provide evidence that this John Robertson was a son of James Robertson, Sr. of Beverley Manor]

Sarah; Sarah resided in Rockingham Co. VA 1787 when she was given
as the mother of Jane Robertson who m. John Henry, this being

River Shanado, part of 400 acres patent to Robert BRECKINRIDGE
12/1/1740 [his 1st wife was a POAGE and his mother is probably
sister of Robert POAGE Sr's wife Elizabeth; his 2nd wife is niece
of Elizabeth (Preston) POAGE.] ... delivered to Alexander
Robertson 20 JN 1749. 21 MAR 1765 John ROBERTSON and Mary to
Thomas TOSH ... 6 AUG 1771 John's will proved 21 AUG 1771; to
wife, son Alexander infant, to chn Jane, Mary, Isabella,
Elizabeth, Margaret, Alexander and 2 unnamed daus who were ob-
viously dec'd when Sarah's mother made her will in 1789. Exors:
