6. MARY3 ROBERTSON (MARY2 LESSLEY, JAMES ALEXANDER1) was born Abt. 1770 in Virginia, and died Bet. 1810 - 1831. She married ADIN WEBB 08 May 1793 in Fayette County, Kentucky, son of JAMES WEBB and MARY MATTHEWS. He was born 29 Sep 1767 in Exeter Twp, Berks, Pennsylvania2,3, and died Jan 1813 in Fort Defiance.

Notes for MARY ROBERTSON:

We know that Adin and Mary married in Fayette Co., KY in 1793 but what we do not know is how she came to be there. She may have been married previously, however we find no previous marriage record in VA, or she may have come with siblings or relatives. Perhaps she came to Kentucky with her Aunt Isabella Lessley or other members of the Lessley family.

1792 Clark Co, KY Tax list: William Roberson, Hugh Robinson, Jesse Robinson, John Robinson, William Robinson

The following is the will and appraisal of Mary Robertson's father:

Augusta Co, VA Will Book 4-434, dated Aug 6, 1771, proved Aug 21, 1771:

John Robertson's will -- To wife; to son, Alexander, infant; to children; to six daughters. Executors, wife Mary and nephew Alex. Robertson, son of brother Mathew Robertson. Proved, by the witnesses. [Lyman Chalkley, Vol 3, pg 120]

Augusta Co, VA Will Book 4-457: 20th November, 1771. John Robertson's appraisement by Jno. Malcom, John Davis, John McCay, Adam Stephenson, recorded. [Lyman Chalkley, Vol 3, pg 121]

Next we find the Will of Mary Robertson's grandfather James Lessly which names his wife Sarah and children and we note that their daughter Mary, the mother of Mary Robertson Webb, is already married and referred as Mary Robertson:

Augusta Co, VA, Will Book 6: Page 146.--5th Mar., Anno que Domini, 1767. James Lessley's will--To wife, Sarah, to manage plantation and support the children; to son, James, $1, having already provided for him; to son, John; to son. Robert and Samuel, home plantation; to daughters, Mary Robertson and Mary Roger; to daughters "now with me," Isabella, Dolly, Sarah, Agness, Elizabeth. Executors, wife Sarah, son James, and William Johnston. Teste: John and William Stuart. Proved, 19th August, 1780 (the witnesses being both dead), by witnesses to handwriting. Sarah, the widow, qualifies. [Lyman Chalkley, Vol 3, pg 157-158]

We next find the will of Mary's grandmother Sarah Lessley which identifies several, but not all, of Mary Robertson Webb's siblings including Mary herself, Isabella, Elizabeth, and Margaret Robertson:

Named in her grandmother Sarah Lessley's will:

Augusta Co, VA, Will Book 8: Page 27.--23d November, 1789. Sarah Lessley's will--To sons, Samuel, John, and daughters, Isabella, Agness, Elizabeth, and son, Robert, 1 shilling each; to niece, Agness Lessley, daughter of James Lessley; to nieces, Mary, Isabella, Elizabeth, Margaret Robertson, daughters of John Robertson, deceased; to daughter, Margaret Rodgers; to daughter, Sarah. Executor,

Joseph Bell. Teste: Alex. Nelson, Jr.; Suckey Bell. Proved, December Court, 1792, by the witnesses. Executor refuses. Administration granted Joseph Wilson. [Lyman Chalkley Vol 3, pg 199]

Given the previous documents the following court documents give evidence as to the parents of Adin's second wife Mary Roberton/Robinson. Also we find that Mary has another sister Jane who married John Henry who still resides in Rockinghan Co., VA. Mary and Isabelle convery to Samuel Lessly whatever interests they may have had in the estate of their mother and grandmother refered to below as "Mary and Sarah".

Mar 21, 1799 Jessamine Co, KY, WB9-13: Isabell (mark) Robinson, of Jessamine County, Ky., spinster, to brother-in-law, Adin Webb, of same place, house carpenter, power attorney to recover anything coming to Isabell by means of her grandmother, Sarah Leslie; also whatever is coming to her from John Henry, of Rockingham County. Acknowledged before Thos. Bodley at Lexington, Ky

[Lyman Chalkley, Vol 3, pg 216]

Apr 19, 1799 Jessamine Co, KY, WB9-15: Adin Webb, of Jessamine County, Ky., in right of wife Mary, who was Mary Robertson, a devisee of Sarah Lessley, and as attorney for Isabella (above) conveys to Samuel Lessley all interests of Mary and Sarah. Teste: J. Monroe, Wm. Sterrett, C. Kinney. But above agreement does not affect John Henry, of Rockingham, who married Jane Robertson.

[Lyman Chalkley, Vol 3, pg 216]

Note: Samuel Lessley is Mary's uncle and the child of James Lessley and wife Sarah. Jane is apparently the sister of Mary and Isabell however she is not named in Sarah Lessley's will and may be either Elizabeth or Margaret who are named.

Marriage Notes for MARY ROBERTSON and ADIN WEBB:

Children of MARY ROBERTSON and ADIN WEBB are:

ELIZABETH4 WEBB, b. May 19, 1794, Kentucky

CHARLOTTE WEBB, b. Apr 19, 1797, Clark County, Kentucky

ADDISON WEBB, b. Abt. 1798, Jessamine Co., KY; d. Aft. 1831.

It appears quite probable that Adin's son Addison is the same Addison Webb who married NANCY DILLON and moved to Huntsville, Alabama and later to Aberdeen in Monroe County, Mississippi. Considerable research has been done on this family by Louise Horton and documented in her Descendants of Addison R Webb . Certainly there are enough similarities to warrant our looking seriously at this connection. No marriage record exists in Clark Co., KY for their marriage however surrounding counties have yet to be checked. We do know that Addison, son of Adin Webb, is no longer on the tax rolls of Clark Co., KY after 1824. Shortly thereafter an Addison Webb appears in Alabama and then to Mississippi. Louise's family history suggests a connection of Ohio in the same area where we know Cherrington (Adin's grandmother remarried to a Cherrington) relatives moved to. It is also known that Adin's mother's brother Townsend Matthews had descendants who moved to the same are in Ohio. Also we note that Addison's brother Jefferson in the 1860 census notes that he was born in Ohio which has always seemed odd.

LUCIAN L. WEBB, b. Abt. 1801; d. Bet. 1829 - 1830, Clark Co., KY - unmarried.

1823-29 Clark Co., KY Tax List10: Adin's son Lucien appears on the tax rolls

In 1827 Lucien Webb bought 60 acres of land in Clark Co., Kentucky from his brother-in-law Frederick Hammer (Clark Co., KY Deed Book 23, p. 8). Lucien then sold this land to Reubin Rucker on Sep 7, 1829 however the deed was not recorded as Lucien died before full payment had been received under the conditions of the deed. Reubin Rucker later file a civil suit Rucker v. Webb Heirs14 in order to have the land legally converyed to him. In the suit are named the siblings and heirs of Lucien Webb: Jefferson Webb, Elizabeth Hammers wife of Frederick Hammers, Addison Webb, Bdellium Webb, James Webb, Charlotte Jacobs wife of Daniel Jacobs.

JEFFERSON WEBB, b. Abt. 1804, Kentucky or Ohio per 1850 & 1860 census

BDELLIUM WEBB, b. Abt. 180812, prob. Clark Co., Kentucky; d. Aft. 183114.
