John May was baptised on 23rd April 1809 at Templeton in Devon, son of Mary May, formerly Cockram, and her husband Robert May, a farmer. John was the seventh of the couple's ten children.

In 1832, aged about 23, John married Margaret Skinner at Tiverton. They had several children together and appear to have stayed at Tiverton. The 1841 census finds them living at Jurishayes Cottages there, with John working as an agricultural labourer. Margaret died in 1849. The 1851 census finds John and three of his children living at Withleigh Mill to the west of Tiverton.

John remarried in 1856 to a Mary Clapp from Witheridge. They married at Tiverton, before moving to Cruwys Morchard, where they lived at Eveleigh in both the 1861 and 1871 censuses.

John died in 1873, aged 63, and was buried at Cruwys Morchard. Mary outlived him by just over a year.

This baptism has been linked to the adult John May of the censuses in light of his stated place of birth and approximate age, and the fact that in 1841 John and his wife Margaret were witnesses to the marriage of Sarah May, who was sister of the John baptised at Templeton in 1809.
