Mary Clapp's origins have yet to be established. She later claimed to be born around 1800 at Witheridge in Devon. She appears in the 1841 census at Cruwys Morchard, with a one year old Eleanor Clapp living with her. By 1851 she was living in the neighbouring parish of Tiverton and working as a domestic servant.
In 1856 Mary married a widower named John May. They appear in both the 1861 and 1871 censuses living at Eveleigh in Cruwys Morchard. John died in 1873. Mary died the following year. She was buried at Cruwys Morchard on 7th May 1874.
