Margaret Skinner's origins have yet to be established. She claimed in the 1841 census to have been born in Devon, and the age quoted when she died suggests she was born around 1803. Her first confirmed sighting is on 25th March 1832, when she was married at Tiverton in Devon to an agricultural labourer named John May.

Margaret and John stayed in Tiverton after their marriage, having at least four children there. The 1841 census finds them living at Jurishayes Cottages, in the rural west of Tiverton parish, over two miles from the town itself.

Margaret died in 1849. She was said to be 46 years old. John survived her, remarrying seven years later.
