Thomas May was born on 21st November 1795 and baptised the following month at Cruwys Morchard in Devon, son of Mary May, formerly Cockram, and her husband Robert May, a farmer. Thomas was the second of the couple's ten children, but his elder brother died young, making Thomas effectively the eldest. When Thomas was still a small boy the family moved to the neighbouring parish of Templeton.

In 1826, aged 30, Thomas married Mary Grear at Thorverton. They had a number children together. The 1841 census finds the family living at Rowlands in Tiverton. Back in Templeton, Thomas's father died in 1842. The 1851 census finds Thomas, Mary and two children living back in Thomas's native Cruwys Morchard at Groubear. At this time Thomas was working as a dairyman. In 1857 Thomas's mother died. In 1861 Thomas, Mary and three children were living at Palmers Village to the west of Tiverton.

Thomas died in 1868, aged 72. Mary outlived him, and appears in the 1871 census living with one of their daughters.

    d. Thomas MAY, March Quarter 1868, Tiverton Registration District, Volume 5b, page 305, aged 75 [1792/3]

Thomas appears to have died between 1861 and 1871 as Mary appears in the 1871 census described as a widow. This appears to be the only death of an adult Thomas May in the Tiverton district in that time.
