Robert May was baptised on 13th November 1803 at Templeton in Devon, son of Mary May, formerly Cockram, and her husband Robert May, a farmer. Young Robert was the fifth of the couple's ten children.

Robert was married on 29th June 1828, aged 24, to Mary Brookland, who was from Cheriton Fitzpaine. They married and settled in Cullompton, where they had at least seven children. The 1841 census finds them living there at Duck Street with five children. Robert was working as a tanner at this time. In 1851 they were still in Cullompton, this time on Exeter Road. By 1861 they were back on Duck Street. In both 1851 and 1861 Robert was described as a tanner's labourer.

Mary appears to have died in 1863, aged 58. Robert outlived her by just over five years and died in 1869, aged 65.
