Mary Brookland was baptised on 9th June 1805 at Cheriton Fitzpaine in Devon, daughter of Mahershalalhashbaz Brookland and his wife Elizabeth.
Mary was married on 29th June 1828 at Cullompton, about ten miles east of Cheriton Fitzpaine, to a tanner named Robert May. They appear to have stayed in Cullompton, and had at least seven children together. Both the 1841 and 1861 censuses find the family living at Duck Street in Cullompton.
Mary appears to have died in 1863, aged 58. Robert outlived her by just over five years.

d. Mary MAY, December Quarter 1863, Tiverton Registration District, Volume 5b, page 286, aged 59 [1803/4]
This appears to be the most likely death - the age is about right and it is the only plausible Mary May death in Tiverton district (which covered Cullompton) between the 1861 and 1871 censuses. Mary has not been found in the 1871 census.
