Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Image:HandleyJohnBordenNE.jpg

John Handley's land (Borden Tract NE, 257 acres, 1751) as shown on the map meticulously drawn by J.R. Hildebrand, cartographer. This map is copyrighted©, used by permission of John Hildebrand, son of J.R. Hildebrand, April, 2009. (Note: J.R. Hildebrand's map shows two adjoining 257-acre tracts, but only one appears to be listed in Chalkley's transcriptions).

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Page 183.--26th November, 1751. Borden, etc., to John Hanley, 257 acres of 92,100. Broad Spring Run, otherwise called Back Creek, joining Joseph Kennedy's 300-acre tract surveyed.
  • Page 69.--15th November, 1762. James Simpson and Jane ( ) to John Handey, £150, 300 acres on Cowpasture. Delivered: Jno. Handley, 19th November, 1770.

Disposition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Page 623.--21st May, 1764. John Handley and Grizel ( ) to William Reah, £50, 257 acres corner tract of 300 acres surveyed to Joseph Kennedy, on Broad Spring Run, otherwise called Back Creek. Teste: James Wardlaw, Wm. Edmiston. Jas. Pollock, Mathew Morehead.
  • John Handley, having a concern over the future of his son's family, decided that on the first of October, 1781 he would transfer the ownership of his 300 acre plantation to his grandson John Handley, son of Alexander Handley, recently deceased. This property was located on the Southeast side of the Cowpasture River. Not far from the junction of the Jackson River and the beginnings of the James River, one of the larger streams in Virginia. Also included in this property transfer would have been John Handley's Mill, which was located along the bank of the Cowpasture River. John Senior and his wife Grizel bought this 300 acres from James Simpson on the 15th of November 1762. Apparently, by the time of this gift of land to his grandson, John Senior's wife Grizel had died, as her name was not listed on any of the paperwork that completed this transfer.
