John Goodman was baptised on 1st April 1799 at Willen in Buckinghamshire, son of Elizabeth Goodman, formerly Binks, and her husband Henry Goodman, a labourer. John had a brother, William, who was baptised on the same day. The parish records do not specify that they were twins and it was nearly five years since his parents' previous child's baptism, so it is possible that one of the boys was a couple of years old.
John was married at Willen on 20th December 1824, aged 25, to Sarah Cross. She was from Cassington in Oxfordshire, nearly forty miles south-west of Willen. The following year they returned to Cassington to have their first child baptised there, although the family's abode was given as Willen on the baptism record, suggesting that they were only visiting.
They returned to Willen and had another two children baptised there in 1827 and 1829. Sarah died in 1830, aged 33, and was buried at Willen. John's father died the following year.
On 2nd June 1834 John married again. His second wife was Elizabeth Harris from Lathbury, about three miles north of Willen. She was eleven years his junior. John and Elizabeth went on to have another twelve children together at Willen between 1834 and 1857. John's mother died in 1843.
Not all of John and Elizabeth's children lived to adulthood; two of the children died in 1850, aged four and two, whilst their eldest daughter died in 1853 aged nineteen, and another daughter died in 1857 aged fourteen.
By the time John and Elizabeth's youngest child was born she was 47 years old and he was 58.
John's eldest son from his first marriage also died as a young man in 1861.
Each census from 1841 to 1871 finds Elizabeth, John and some of their children living in Willen.[9] John worked as an agricultural labourer.
John died at Willen on 8th September 1880, aged at least 81. Elizabeth survived him by just under eight years.
