Advisory on John Clendenin

Some reports claim that Archibald Clendenin's two sons, Archibald and Charles, were apparently killed just prior to in the Kerr's Creek Massacres on 17 July, 1763, but in Archibald's will, written in 1748, he names sons Archibald, Jr. and John. (Not Charles)

John Clendenin apparently survived the massacre, as he was listed in his brothers's administration records in Augusta County:

Page 37.--19th August, 1767. Archd. Clendenning's estate settlement, by Ann Clendenning. recorded--Paid Ash Claftrock, John Clendenning, Wm. Galespie, Zopher Carpenter, James Furguson, David Galloway, James Millican, Robt. Galespie, Geo. Roberts, Benj. Kimsey, John Bailer, John Jeremiah; paid by Jeremiah Seeley.

Further proof that John Clendenin/Clendennan/Clendennon survived, as supported by the following reference: November session, 1766, Augusta County Court, reported in Chalkley, Volume I p.342: "This day Samuel Crockett came before me and made oath that he, the said Samuel Crockett, served as sergeant at Captain John Dickinson's at the Cowpasture River under the command of Captain Walter Cunningham from 27 of November to 20 of March in said company, and said that John Clendennen, being neglected from the former to the latter date of being returned in the payroll, was out of his pay. Signed, John Dickinson" This was part of the suit of Clendennin vs Cunningham "to pay as a soldier".

From Chalkley: 20 June 1769, Augusta: Constables apptd, Richard Mays, vice John Clendennin. These two were neighbors on the Cowpasture River.

Kerr's Creek Massacres

According to sources, Archibald Clendenin's two sons were killed by Shawnee Indians two days prior to the 2nd Kerr's Creek Massacre on 17 July, 1763. Additional information is listed in the following article: The Kerr's Creek Massacres 1759-1763

Processioning List of 1767-68

"Processioning" was the process or periodically reviewing and agreeing upon property lines between settlers. Processioning Lists can be useful in determining the area of a settler and the neighboring settlers at a specific time period:
