Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Page 410.--26th October, 1769. John Craig and Sarah ( ) to George Null, eldest son and heir of Nicholas Null, deceased, £15, 400 acres on Shanandore between river and Peaked Mountain patented to said John Craige, 16th May, 1765, Boone's Run; this tract was formerly patented to James Wood, but was forfeited for non-payment of quit rents and cultivation.

Disposition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Page 344.--16th August, 1768. George ( ) Null and Barbara to Jacob Hamor (or Hammer), £30, 90 acres on Boon's Run, a branch of Shanandore River, patented to Nicholas Null, 15th August, 1764, and descended to George as eldest son and heir; corner Tack's land, Charles Foy's line. Teste: Daniel Smith, Thomas ( ) Burk, Jacob Nicholas, Robert Shanklin (Certified by A. McClenachan, C. A. C., for John Madison, late C. A. C. This is the first, 23d March, 1769). Delivered: Henry Hammer, 30th June, 1792.

From Chalkley’s Augusta County Records:

  • Vol. 1 - OCTOBER, 1769 (B). - Nicholas Null vs. John Craig.--Chancery. Bill filed, 1767. Revived, 1768, November. Nicholas Null, orator. Revived by George Null, eldest son and heir. Nicholas Null, late of Pennsylvania, but now of this Colony, came to Virginia, 1750. Applied to William Burk for a piece of land which Burk had bought of James Wood of Frederick. John Craig had a claim on the land. Null was a German. Valentine Pence was brother-in-law of Nicholas Null.
  • Vol. 1 - OCTOBER 21, 1769. - (59) George Null, eldest son and heir of Nicholas Null, vs. John Craig. Decree in chancery for plaintiff for 400 acres.
