Facts and Events
The Missisquoi Historical Society (MHS) archives have three legal documents (MHS file number) relating to Joel: a Deed of Title (MHS file #V-1-1), Oct. 9, 1828, whereby, without apparent payment, Joel takes title from Aaron Martindale to part of lot 9 in the 3rd Range of Stanbridge, a Sale & Conveyance (V-1-2), May 30, 1837, whereby, for 350 pounds, Joel sells part of lot 9 in the 3rd Range of Stanbridge to his brother James, and a Security (mortgage) registration (V-1-3), May 30, 1837, securing, on the south part of lot 23 in the 3rd Range of Stanbridge, two previously issued promissory notes totalling 58 pounds, 10 shillings, 9 pence in favour of his brother James. In addition the MHS has a document (V-941-2) about the life of Zebulon Cornell, of Cornell's mill, the site of the MHS museum, which states the following: "Soon after his arrival here (in Stanbridge East in 1825), he (Zebulon) bought the property belonging to John Capron, consisting of several acres of land and a store well stocked with dry goods and other articles of trade. In the following year, he entered into partnership with Joel Rollin, a young man from Dunham, and erected a distillery near Furnace Brook, also a blacksmith's shop and ashery in the village. Business was carried on successfully until the close of the second year, when Cornell retired from the firm, and afterwards acquired the mill property formerly owned by Robert Wilson." Joel was born in 1802 which made him only 24 when he joined Zebulon Cornell, 26 when he took title from Martindale and 35 when, apparently needing money, he signed the documents in favor of his brother James and he died less than six months later on Nov. 21, 1837. In all four documents, both Joel and James were recorded as Rollin and not Rollins. Legal Documents concerning Joel Rollins as follows:
