Facts and Events
1851 Census: Missisquoi, Canada East, farmer, Canada, episcopalian, age 16. 1855 Militia of Stanbridge, Missisquoi, Captain John Corey's Company, 24 November, 1855: George Rollins, single, age 19 residing at lot #12, 3rd range. Family lore is that George went west and was never heard from again. Rena Rollins put this in writing in a 1952 letter to Elfrida Coutu as "George went west with the gold rush to California & has never been heard from since." Gold was discovered in California in 1848. In 1857 George was still in Quebec giving Power of Attorney to Charles A. Rice. It seems more likely that George who was a moulder and machinist went west, not for gold, but because his skills were needed in the west. Unfortunately it is not known whether George went by sea from an east coast port around South America or through Central America or went directly overland to California. Until a post 1858 record is found it can be assumed that he perished somewhere from illness, accident, of any other unfortunate mishap. (Research):4 Nov, 1858 - signs Deed of Acceptance. References
