Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA
Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:
- Page 331.--18th May, 1768. John Kerr and Lucy ( ) and William Kerr and Martha ( ) to James Laird, £50, 124 acres on Middle River of Shanando, 100 of which is part of 400 joining Beverley Manor and patented to said John 30th July, 1742, the other 24 acres patented to said William 2d June, 1760, joining the former tract; corner John Allison. Teste: Edward Rutledge, Alexander Walker, Wm. ( ) Mathers. Delivered: James Laird, February, 1770. [Note: John and Lucy Kerr were the parents of James Laird's wife Lucy Kerr].

- Page 190.--20th March, 1770. James Laird to John Hinds, £50, mortgage, 124 acres on Middle River of Shanando, part of 400 acres formerly John Kerr's; corner John Allison's land. Teste: Jno. Poage, Samuel Erwin, Alexander Walker. [Note: John Hinds was a brother-in-law of James Laird. John's wife Jane Kerr and James Laird's wife Leticia were sisters].
Will of James Laird
- Will Book No. 1, pg. 47:
- IN THE NAME OF GOD AMAN. The Twenty Second Day of September one thousand seven hundred and eighty, I James Laird of Washington County & State of Virginia being in perfect Health of Body and of Sound mind and memory Thankss be given to God for the same. Yet -- the Mortality of my Body, (and more Especially in this time of Present Danger) Knowing it is appointed all Men once to Die, Do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament, in form and manner following to wit and Principally and first of all I recommend my Soul into the Mercifull hands of Almighty God that gave it and my Body Recommend to the Earth to be Buried at the discretion of my Friends and Countrymen as God and his Providence may please to Permit Nothing Doubting but I shall Receive the same again at the general resurrection of the dead by the Mighty power of God.
- And as Touching my worldly Estat wherewith it has pleased god to Blefs me in this life, I give Devise & dispose the same in the following manner & form.
- First I give & Bequeath to Lettes my well Beloved Wife the whole Disposal of all my moveable Estate during her Widowhood, that Shee may Keep her Family together, and that untill her Oldest Son comes of age in case Shee Marrieth before that time, Shee shall have one third of My moveables or the Value thereof, and in that Case I allow my Executors to apply the other Two Thirds of my moveables and the benefits of my lands for the maintenance of my childran.
- I give my well beloved son JOHN his choice of my Two places the one wherein I now live and that on Clinch (river), and that my well beloved son SAMUEL the other place and if my Executors can obtain my two Entrys of land in Powel's Valley in Carolina State that the same be Equally divided and my son SAMUEL have his first choice and my son JOHN have the other.
- I also allow my three well beloved Daughters (viz) JEAN, LETTES, and MARY, Thirty Pounds each.
- Estimating the money as it pafsed(passed) in the year 1793.
- And I constitue and appoint Benjamin Estill and James Piper of the County and state aforesaid whole and Sole Executors of this my last will and Testament and in case of the Death or non-performance of either of these my Ex'rs, I then Constitute and appoint John Blackburn in stead of such delinquents.

- At a Court held for Washington County, Virginia, the 22nd Hannah Trimble ] day of November 1780, This last will and Testament of James Laird deceaed was proven in Court by the oath of Benjamin Estill and Hannah Trimble two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.

- 16 May 1781 - Inventory of James LAIRD. 16 Sep 1782 Lattice LAIRD, Executor of James - Claim for one rifle lost at King's Mountain - 6 pds 10 shillings.
