Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:
- Page 592.--14th February, 1749. Hugh Douglas, laborer, and Margaret, to James Downing and Mary, his wife, relict of Peter Dyer (deceased), spinteres, 130 acres on Stover's Mill Creek. John Stephenson's line. Teste: Archibald Huston, John Stephenson.

- Page 527.--15th November, 1752. James Downing and Mary to James Wait, 120 acres patented to Hugh Douglas, 25th June, 1747, and conveyed by him to Downing; John Stevenson's line. Teste: Edward Shanklin, Thomas Harrison, Daniel Harrison.
- Page 279.--6th April, 1753. James Downing and Mary to John Love, 1753, 175 acres on Smith Creek; corner John Love's land near land of John Davis on the south side of the head of Smith Creek. Teste: Thomas Millsaps,

John Love and Johanna, to Philip Arrantrout. £18, 175 acres bought by Love from James Downing, who patented it 5th February, 1753. corner said Love's other patent near John Davis's land on the head waters of Smith Creek. John Stephenson's will, dated 13th October, 1777, probated in Rockingham 23d November, 1778; wife. Devisees, Jonathan Taylor and Easter Taylor, two of wife's children (infants). Daughter, Mary Huston, widow of Archd. Huston. Grandsons, Jno. Huston, Stephen Huston, George Huston and Nathan Huston. James Waits' will: Wife Catrine. John Taylor's children, they being the lawful issue of his wife Esther--Sarah and Catherine--to have more than others.

Joseph Waits came from Fairfax Co., VA. He was married to Elizabeth King (daughter of William King). Elizabeth's sister was Mary King Dyer, who came to Augusta Co. with her husband Peter Dyer. Peter Dyer d. in Augusta in 1749 and Mary re-married James Downing. I believe that her mother was Eleanor Taylor, wife of John Taylor of Augusta Co. who d. there in 1747. There is a record in Chalkley for grandmother Eleanor Taylor giving a B. sole gift to her grandson, William Downen in 1750.
I'm primarily a Downing researcher, but I'm now beginning research on the Taylor and Waits families in Augusta, trying to figure out who the John Taylor was who had the earlier death date in 1747.
Anyone have any ideas about how all this might fit together?
