- In the Name of God Amen, I James Beard of Rockingham County and State of Virginia being weak in Body but of sound and perfect mind and memory, Blessed by Almighty God for the same calling unto mind the mortality of my body do and form following (That is to say) principally, and first of all, I Recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it, And for my body I recommend it the earth to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the discretion of my wife and Children nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again, And as touching my worldly estate,
- I give and bequeath to my well beloved wife Jane Beard the sum of two hundred and fifty pounds.
- I also give and bequeath to my daughter Mary Beard two hundred and fifty pounds.
- I also give and bequeath to my son James Beard two hundred and fifty pounds.
- I also give and bequeath to my daughter Margarett Beard two hundred and fifty pounds.
- I also give and bequeath and bequeath to my son William Beard two hundred and fifty pounds.
- I also give and bequeath to my daughter Jane Beard two hundred and fifty pounds.
- I also give and bequeath and bequeath to my son David Beard two hundred and fifty pounds.

- I also allow my Negroes to be kept to work said plantation as long as my wife and children continue together.
- I do hereby appoint my well beloved wife Jane Beard and Executrix of this my Last Will and Testament and also my son James Beard and my son-in-law William Bell Executors hereby revoking all former wills by me made.

Administrators Bond
- Know all men by these presents, that we Jane Beard, James Beard, William Bell, John Hunter [?], John Bell, James Lamme are held and firmly bound to William Herring, Benjamin ___, John Ewing Gentlemen Justices of the court of Rockingham county, now fitting in the sum of eight hundred pounds to the payment whereof, well and truly to be made to the said justices, and their successors, we bind ourselves, and each of us, our and each of our Heirs, Executors, and Administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seals, and dated this twenty seventy day of October Anno Dom. one thousand seven hundred and ninety one and in the 16th year of the commonwealth.
- The condition of the above obligation is such, that if the above bound Jane Beard, James Beard and William Bell, Administrators of all goods, chattels and credits of James Beard deceased, do make or canie [?] to be made, a true and perfect inventory of all and singular the goods, chattels, and credits of the said deceased, which have or shall come to the hands, petition or knowledge of them the sale Jane, James and William or into the hands or possession of any other person or persons for him, and the same to made, do exhibit, or cause to be exhibited in to the said Rockingham court, at such time as he shall be thereto required by the said court, and all the rest and residue of the said goods, chattels, and credits which shall be found remaining upon the said Administrators account, the same being first examined and allowed by the trustees of the said court, for the time being, shall deliver and pay unto such person or persons respectively, as the said Justices by their order or judgement shall direct, pursuant to the laws in that case made and provided, and if it shall here after appear that any last will and testament was made by the said deceased, and the Executor or Executors therein named, do exhibit the same in the said court, making request to have it allowed and approved accordingly, if the said Jane, James and William being thereto required do render and deliver up his letters of administration, approbation of such testament being first had and made in the said court, then this obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in force and virtue.

- 1747. Road ordered from top of the ridge to John Terrald's and James Beard's. This order is a goldmine for researchers, as it contains the names of many of the settlers of the area around the North River of the Shenandoah.
