Everybody in town and county knew Mrs. Kurtz, the keeper of the county jail. Her husband, Jacob Kurtz, was normally the jailor, but she had the credit of carrying the keys and ruling the establishment. In statue, she was like Meg Merrilies, while i official character she strongly resembled in some respects Mrs. Mac Guffog, the keeper of the prison at Portanferry, as described by Guy Mannering.
