Harley Osborne Haines was born in Greenwich Village or Olena Village (about 10 miles north of Greenwich), in Huron County, Ohio. He was born on his mother's 17th birthday - July 12, 1901. Harley's parents, Julian Glendower Haines and Lottie Mae Troup, married on August 30, 1899, in Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan. Julian was 32 and Lottie was just 15. According to Helen Haines Carlisle, Harley's eldest daughter, Lottie's father, William Henry Troup, essentially arranged the marriage. Julian and Lottie had two more children, Walter Raymond "Ray" in 1903 and Myrtle Helen "Helen" in 1907 before Lottie left her husband and, according to the family, took up with another man. She died on February 25, 1912 in Massillon, Stark County, Ohio, and is buried in Olena Cemetery in Bronson Township, Huron County, Ohio.

Harley's father, Julian, worked on the railroad as a "gandy dancer" and was frequently gone from home. After Lottie left, Helen was fostered out to a family, Ray lived with his "Granddad Troup," (William Henry Troup) and Harley was bond to the O'Bannon family in Newark, Ohio. Granddad Troup then enlisted Ray into the Marines in 1916 (he would have only been 13 or 14), according to one family report. This same family report notes that "about 1915 Granddad Troup went to the O'Bannon farm to check on Harley and found him alsleep in the barn, "unkept." Granddad Troup removed Harley from the farm and brought him home.

Harley enlisted in the Navy on 6 December 1919, in Cleveland, and was discharged on 12 August 1921, in Bremerton, Washington, having served on the USS Idaho.

One report notes that Harley and Martha met on Veterans Day (November 11, 1921?) after Harley was discharged from the Navy. Apparently he and his father were working in Shelby at the Shelby Tube Works. Martha was raised on a farm in neighboring Crawford County, not far from Shelby. About that time Shelby Steel Tube Company either closed temporarily or laid off workers due to a downturn in the economy and both Harley and Julian were laid off. Harley found work in South Bend, Indiana, working on interurban cars (one report said he was an apprentice with the Pullman Corporation). Harley was stricken with influenza and unable to work so he and Martha returned to Ohio and moved into her parents' home on a farm in Vernon Township, Crawford County, Ohio. There their first child, Walter Vincent Haines, was born in the home of his maternal grandparents, John Francis Crum and Henrietta "Etta" Faulkner Crum, on May 8, 1923.

Their next four children (Mervin, 1924; James, 1926; Richard, 1928; and Helen, 1929) were born in Sharon Township, Richland County, Ohio. During at least part of this time Harley worked as a piano refinisher.

On September 19, 1929, 20-month-old Richard died in the Shelby Hospital following surgery for appendicitis.

Shortly after Richard's death Harley found work at the Houghton Sulky Company in Marion, Ohio. The family moved to 298 Madison Avenue in Marion, where five more children were born (1930, 1931, 1933, 1935 and 1936). The family moved one final time to 645 Tyler Avenue, during the school year of 1940-1941 [confirming] Harley and Martha purchased the property located at 645 Tyler Street, where their last child was born in 1943.

Harley was a gifted mechanic. He built his own airplane in the 1920s; established Haines Manufacturing; built racing engines for Offenhauser; built and raced his own race cars; and designed and patented the "Handi Clam" ["It's A Hole Hog"] to clean out sewer basins, among other accomplishments.

13 Oct 2016 Note from RMC: Per Patricia Reichelderfer, the family photo was taken in July of 1945 when Jim, Mervin and Walter were on military leave.

18 Jun 2018 Note from RMC: Woody Stanburrough worked for Harley as a bookkeeper and Harley's children recall many stories of him.

Martha Haines' Unfinished Letter about her Husband

Marion, Ohio February 10, 1988

Winchester Speedway OTC Urbana, Ohio 43078

Dear Sirs,

I am writing to thank you for remembering us with the newsletter. I am the wife of Harley O Haines, Sr. He can no longer participate as ill health for several years, and now is in a rest home where he has been this past year. I am aware of the many names of the very old timers even though I never knew them personally. Some I have met by their coming to our home – they were racing drivers. Harley was a mechanic early on for Monk McCurdy Cars, a Ford and a Dyer. Then he built the McCurdy Offy No. 32 See a story by John Sawer written up in the February 1983 issue of “Open Wheels” Magazine. Harley was a person that had to have hands on to keep his interest in any project. Early in our first year of marriage (65 years ago) he got a job in the Street car barns in South Bend Indiana, he was taught how to handle a varnish brush so it would not leave ridges in those beautifully varnished over head ceilings in the interurban cars (only real old timer will remember those). Illness brought us back to our Ohio homes. The experience got him a job re-varnishing autos – yes the old automobiles were varnished. Then of course all the dents [etc.] were first taken care of and he learned to work metal: that lead him into repairing & painting wrecked autos. Then airplane racing in those fast little planes at the Cleveland in the late 1920s caught his interest in building a small aircraft (it was being built in our living room). It never was finished; a large family and the [D]epression put a halt to that. The family kept increasing through the years until by the War No 2 it had increased to 10 living children. Now you know why I only knew so few of the racing people personally. I seldom went to a race. Of course he became an A & E [airplane & engine] mechanic in the 30s and was an early licensed one in this area, but as the airplanes got larger and more technical, and no time to study he gave that up in the early part of the War as his business kept him [busy]. He taught welding to men that were in aircraft plants and still kept auto fix[ing] during that period. Our sons that were old enough to help were drafted (3) in War #2, then in the Korean Conflict 3 more were in that one also a son-in-law. This past October 25th our son Harley Jr. succumbed to lung cancer, just 3 days before our 65 wedding anniversary. Harley Jr was the only son interested in auto racing and he [mechanized] one of the new Sprints with the “Crazy Tops.” [The unfinished letter ends.]

Per a 1988 letter by Harley's wife, Martha, he allowed his airplane & engine mechancis license to lapse for several reasons including that he was too busy with his business & that during WWII and the Korean Conflict, his sons of working age were active military & this was a contributing factor. Also, per his son, John Robert Haines, stated at a family reunion on July 28, 2012, Harley was not doing enough airplane inspections to warrent keeping the license.

The story of Harley and Martha

These two lovers came together on Veterans [Day] 1922 Harley a young brash 22 yrs old fresh out of the Navy of 4 yrs during [World War I]; Martha a teen age girl of seventeen. Harley was in his uniform and I am sure Martha was taken by this handsome sailor. These two lovers were married and shortly thereafter [their] first child Walter was born. Harley by this time was working in the Shelby Tube Works with his father Julian. Now as I can understand there was a severe slow down in the economy and Harley and Julian were laid off. Harley with his now bride, Martha, moved to South Bend Indiana where Harley served apprentice fancy Pullman passenger car restoration and building new ones.

Before we get [too] far into this story of two people, [let’s] examine a little of [each] background. Martha was born to _____ [Henrietta “Etta” Faulkner] Crum and John [F.] Crum in 1905 on the Crum farm about half way between Shelby and Tiro Ohio. The Crums settled on this land grant farm after serving in War of 1812. Harley was born to Lottie and Julian Haines. Harley was born in 1900 in the village of Olena Ohio about 10 miles north of Greenwich Ohio. Harley had a brother Ray [Walter Raymond Haines] and a sister Helen [Myrtle Helen Haines]. When Harley who was about 10 1/2 to 11 yrs. Old, his mother Lottie left leaving Julian with 3 children. Since Julian worked on the rail road as a gandy dancer and was gone from home, the children were removed and resettled as follows, Helen was fostered out to a family she was age 5 or 6, Harley was bonded out to a family by the name of Obanon [O’Bannon family farm in Newark, Ohio] and Ray was taken in by Lottie father Granddad Troup. Ray was enlisted in the Marines in 1916. About 1915 [Granddad] Troup went to the [O’Bannon] farm to check on Harley. Harley was [asleep] in the barn, [unkempt]. [Granddad] Troup removed Harley and took him home. In late 1917 he signed for Harley to join the Navy.

Martha was the youngest of five children. Clyde was the eldest then Bryan, then Alice, Georg, Scott and Martha.

Fast forward to 1922 Harley and Martha are married and are about to have their first child. Harley’s opportunity for work in Shelby when the Tube Works temporarily shut down. He heard about the chance to serve his apprenticeship with Pullman Corporation in South Bend, Indiana and so Martha and he moved. Now calamity strikes as Harley and each of the people in their house come down with the flu. Now Martha is the only one in the house who has not contracted the flu. Her claim is she sucked on 4 livers each day thereby staving off the flu. I kind of doubt this but it’s her story. They now move back to Crum Farm in Ohio where Harley will convalesce for 3 months. While all of this going on Martha is about to deliver her first child Walter Vincent Haines
