The girls, six and seven years old, were sleeping in a bed near the stove. The mother lighted the stove preparatory to ironing, and left the tent on an errand for a few minutes. The little girls were taken to the St. Lawrence hospital where they died. The thin clothes afforded little protection for their bodies and the burns extended over the entire surface. The hair of the children was burned away and their eyes burned shut. Elmer Groh, is a son of Dave Groh who moved to Lansing from Homestead a few years ago. OBITUARY - LOCAL MAN DIES OF HEART ATTACK --- 1949 THE STATE JOURNAL, Lansing, MI. (Pg. 6) June 1,- Elmer Groh, 57, of 4675 Meridian rd., died of a heart attack about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at 1415 E. Michigan Ave. The fire department inhalator squad was unable to revive the victim. He is survived by the widow, Ethel; one son Elmer Jr.; three brothers, Roy, Ray and Jay; four sisters, Mrs. Lottie Tierney, Mrs. Inez Clark, Mrs. Gladys Kleinsmith, and Mrs. Mary Brown. The body was removed to Gorsline-Runciman funeral home where funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. Malcolm Cronk will officiate. Place of interment was not announced. Mr. Groh was born Feb. 2, 1892, and operated a poultry ranch. He was a member of South Baptist Church. FUNERAL - Elmer I. GROH 1949 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Funeral services for Elmer I. Groh 57, of 4675 Meridian rd., who died suddenly Tuesday, will be held from the Gorsline-Runciman funeral home Friday at 10 a.m. instead of 2:30 p.m. Friday as previously stated. Rev. Ma.comb Cronk of South Baptist church will officiate. Interment will be in the Mt. Hope cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gorman Tremp, William Groh, , Edwin Brown, Allen Groh, Eugene Groh and Charles Groh.
