Elijah Conkling, son of Joseph and Mary (Marsh) Conkling was born on 25 September 1827 in Butler County, Ohio. On 7 April 1853, he married Rebecca Tracy, daughter of Archibald Tracy and Sarah (Hazelett) Tracy. Rebecca’s grandparents are said to have emigrated from Ireland. Elijah and his family lived on a farm in Butler County, Ohio. Around 1870, the families of Elijah, his brother, Moses and their father moved to Kansas. In 1880 the family was living in Jefferson County, Kansas. Elijah’s nephew, John Conklin was living with the family at this time. Later they moved to Topeka (Shawnee County), Kansas. Elijah, Rebecca, and daughters Nellie, and Alma Etta are buried at the Rochester Cemetery in Topeka, Kansas (section 2, lot 171). Elijah’s father, Joseph Cory Conkling (1794-1872) is also buried there. Rebecca was born in October of 1829 or 1830 and died in 1900. In 1895, Elijah wrote down some information on the Conklin family which he stated was from “the old records”. Most of his information supports information found in other sources Many of the dates for this family are from Elijah’s records.

The children of Elijah and Rebecca (Tracy) Conkling: Mary Ellen Conklin was born on 5 February 1854 in Butler County, Ohio. On 29 June 1879 she married E.J. Burton. Mary died on 1 April 1920. Her children are probably the Otho E. Burton of Washburn, 1942 will of their Aunt Alma.
