Cory Elmer Conklin, son of Elijah and Rebecca (Tracy) Conklin was born 12 October 1862 in McGonigle (Butler County), Ohio. His obituary states that he moved to Kansas with his family in 1870. They settled in Jefferson County, Kansas. As of 1900 he was living in Chanute (Neosho County), Kansas with his wife, Henrietta Estelle Stone, daughter of E.R. and Eliza (Duncan) Stone. He attended Kansas State College in Manhatten, Kansas, but left college to take a jeweler apprenticeship. Cory established a jewelry store in Chanute in 1894. Sometime before this he had also lived in Texas for awhile where his first son was born. His obituary says that he took an active interest in civic affairs. He was a councilman and was proud of his tradition of always being first to vote in his precinct. Cory died on 9 February 1936 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Chanute. Henrietta was born in April, 1869 in Carthage, Illinois and died in Chanute in July, 1941. Her will refers to land which she owned in Ellis County, Oklahoma. |
