Ebenezer Ross FENIMORE Sr was born on 4 Mar 1768 in Pennsylvania. He served in the military in 1793 in Pennsylvania. In 1793 Ebenezer was listed as Ensign EBENEZER FINNEMOREin the militia of Allegheny Co. Pennsylvania. He appeared on the census in 1808 in Ross Co, Ohio. Ebenezer is shown in the 1808 and 1809 Federal Census via the tax list. In 1808 he is listed as Ebenzer Fenimore, 1st District. In 1809 he is listed as Ebenezer Fennemore in Union TWP, page 46. He served in the military in 1812 in Pennsylvania. Ebenezer was a Quartermaster during the War of 1812. He was issued a bounty land warrant for his services. The warrant was later purchased by a John Hough of Chillicothe, Ohio. Mr Hough had also purchased a warrant issued to Ebenezer's son William for his service in the War of 1812. A newspaper article printed on Saturday, 2 Oct 1813 mentioned Ebenezer. A quote follows: A letter to the public regarding Gen. Harrison's troops is signed by Brig. Gen. Robert Lucas, Col. John M'Donald, Col. James Denny, Col. William Keys, Col. John Fergusus, Maj. Isaac Bonser, Maj. James Kilgore, Maj. Valentine Kepfer, Maj. Adam Mallow, Maj. John Willett, Maj. allen Trimble, Capt. N. Beaseley, Maj. James Wilson, Maj. Preslay Morris, Maj. John Boggs, Maj. William Rtuledge, Willima Key Bond (judge advocate), Capt. Richard Hooker, Brig. Q. M. Ebenezer Fennimore, Brig. Gen. James Manary, Brig. Q. M. Ezra Osborne. The letter mentions Gov. Return J. Meigs and General M'Arghur." He was buried in Sep 1854 in Ross Co, Ohio. Ebenezers headstone is marble and 3'6" tall and 16 inches wide. It is inscribed as follows: Ebenezer Fenimore, Died Sep 4, 1854, Aged 86 years 5 mos. It has a pointed top and was delivered to the Fenimore yard. Apparently Ebenezer and his wife Mary are buried his land near Chillocothe, Ohio. Ebenezers coffin cost $9.00 and was inlaid with 8 yards of a material called Jaconet and 2 1/2 yards of blue muslin material which at the time cost $4.68. Ebenezer was buried wearing white silk gloves. His estate was worth $2017.91 exclusive of the value of the home or land when it was assayed. He died on 4 Sep 1854 in Union Township, Ross, Ohio. He was working as a Farmer Life Long in Union Township, Ross, Ohio. He has reference number 128. He owned a log cabin in Pittsburgh in 1798 and was one of only a few homeowners on the tax rolls. His name was written as Ebenz Finnamore. His cabin was 22' by 24" was two stories high and had nine windows and 108 lights and stood on a 4800 sq. foot log. The home and land were worth $500.00 at the time. In 1800 he moved his family to Union TWP, Ross Co, Ohio. On the 20th of April in 1803 he purchased 1690 and 2/3rds acres of land located in Union Township in Ross County, Ohio from a Judge John and Catherine Welkins who lived in a borough of Pittsburgh. The land was surveyed by the founder of Chillicothe, Ohio General Nathaniel Massive. The land was located on the North Fork of Paint Creek on a stream called Dry Run about five miles South East of Frankfort, Ohio. The deed was written in Pittsburgh and recorded in Ross County, Ohio. Ebenezer ran for the candidacy of Ross County Commissioner in 1808. (abstract from the Scioto Gazette) He was a commissioner for many years in Ross County. Ebenezer was a farmer at the time of his death. It is not known what caused his death. He wrote out his will on the 12th of August in 1846 which was witnessed by a Isaac and Maria Pinto. In his will he left three fields to his son Henry. He gave $100.00 each to his sons Matthew, Samuel, George, Harriet, and daughter Sarah. He left $100.00 to each of the children of his deceased son named John. There is no mention of his son Aaron because he was under age. Ebenezer left his land in Indiana to his son William. Ebenezers farm on Dry Run was on the North Fork of Paint Creek which is about five miles south east of Frankfort, Ohio. Ebenezer paid Mr Nimrod Russ $7.62 for the following work given between March 1853 and April 1854: Team Chipping and Hauling a load of wood $1.50, 3-/2 days chopping wood $1.73, One days work with a team hauling a load of wood $1.50, hauling 4 loads of wood $1.00, hauling 3 loads of wood .75, chopping a hauling one cord of wood .75, hauling 2 chords of wood .75, hauling a load of planks from saw mill .62, chopping and hauling one load of wood .25. Mr Nimrod was given $2.00 credit in corn for his services. The 1850 Census for Ross Co., Union Townshio taken on 5 Sep 1850 showed Ebenezers property valued at $8000.00. He had Matthew S. b. 3/6/1858, d. 1927, Summitville, IN who md. Laura ? (1864-1941). They had Linna, 1883; Ella 1885; Nellie 1888; Roy A. 1890-1943; Veva 1893-1970 and Burr 1896. Matthew also had brothers and sisters. Does this sound like your family? This information is from a book by Jerri Fredin publ. in 1978. This family is descended from Ebenezer Fenimore and Mary ?Rhett and they lived for awhile in Ross county, OH. They may go back to William Fenimore and Martha Mott of Burlington county, NJ (which is the home of Richard Fenimore who came from England).
