Facts and Events
WILLIAM FENIMORE was born in 1736 in Burlington Co. New Jersey. He died after 1819 in Woods County, West Virginia. He has reference number 256. William was left 5 Pounds Sterling in the will of his cousin John Fenimore who was the son of William his fathers brother. William and his wife were slave owners who treated their slaves well according to daughter Hannah. According to Jerri Fredin: During the siege of Philadelphia a company of English soldiers came into the house in Mount Holly, New Jersey and took all the furniture into the yard, scattered the feathers from the beds "to the four winds" and then set fire to the furniture. The soldiers made Hannah dance for them. William was furious then took off his Quaker coat and placed it on the burning furniture and said "Damn Quakerism. I will have my revenge." There is no record of his name on the New Jersey Troop records however he may have enlisted with another colony. |
