Overview

Gottlieb Schwartz [Black] was born at Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1747, son of Martin Schwartz and Margaretha Lohrmann, and sponsored at baptism by his maternal grandfather Peter Lohrmann. He was in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia by June 1762, when he and his brother Henry were chain carriers for a survey on Toms Brook, a tributary of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. He purchased a tract of 89 acres from Daniel Shaver in that neighborhood in May 1772, and in March of 1778 he was listed as a resident of Augusta County, Virginia when he sold that tract back to Daniel Shaver. That same month "Cutlip Black" purchased land in Augusta County, Virginia from Alexander Montgomery and Robert Thompson. Cutlip Black wrote a will in July 1785, naming his wife Margaret, son, John, underage, and daughter, Shusy (Susie?) as heirs. The will was probated February 11, 1790. Citation: Wikitree.com

According to Liz Bfull:

CUTLIP BLACK, signed his will, 1785, in Augusta with a German name, Gotlieb Schwartz. In Rockbridge, 8 April 1830, JOHN BLACK and Robt. R. Barton signed an indenture guaranteeing a loan. John signed his name Johannes Schwartz. The 26th day of September 1835, John Black Senr. and REBECCA BLACK his wife sold land to James Crossly, Jr. in Rockbridge. John signed in German and Rebecca in English. I think Rebecca is a McCutcheon and I think John is the son of Cutlip, but cannot prove it.
