Peter, son of Martin Schwartz and Margaretha Lohrmann was born about 1741 in Germantown, Pennsylvania and was apparently the oldest surviving son, by the time the family settled in Virginia, because according to colonial law the oldest son was the sole heir unless there was a will, and Peter is the son who inherited the 120 acres his father purchased in 1755. Peter was also called "heir at law" when George Keller was appointed guardian of his youngest brother, John, in 1774 and filed the final account with the court in 1782. Peter like his brothers, Henry, Martin and Gottlieb, had helped survey land and by the spring of 1762 he was old enough to acquire land. "Peter Black" acquired 219 acres in June 1762, from Joseph Reitenauer, adjoining the land of George Sommer, and married about 1765. In 1770 he attended Saint Paul's Lutheran church in nearby Strasburg, and had a son baptized that year. Reverend Muhlenberg recorded baptizing a daughter of Peter and Susanna in "Millerstadt" (Woodstock) in 1774. Peter purchased another tract of 161 acres on Toms Brook from John Sommers in 1771 and when a survey of farms was made by Jonathan Clark in 1786, this farm was occupied by a tenant and described as: "In good order, 4 acres of bottom meadow and11 acres of high land in cultivation. Orchard, 15 indifferent apple trees." In July 1777, "Peter Black" was appointed overseer of the road from his place on Toms Brook, to Snapp's Mill (on Tumbling Run) in place of George Keller and "Peter Black" is also listed on Alexander Machir's list of men in the 15th Regiment of the Dunmore County, (later renamed Shenandoah County), militia in 1776. Peter's "home farm" was not included in the Clark survey mentioned above, but by 1775 it included 287 acres and when he wrote his will in 1814, he left the entire tract "I now live on lying and being on the North River, containing 287 acres," to his son, George. Peter's will was probated March 11, 1816.
