Anna Johanna Andersdotter Almquist. She came from Sweden in 1880 when she was 26 with her first husband Gustaf and their two daughters Alma Sofia (3 years old) and Potencia Suafer (under a year). Gustaf had visited his brothers, John and Emanuel in Wisconsin to scope out their new Country in 1877. He liked it so well that he returned for his family and brought them to Clam Falls Wisconsin. She died in her home in Clam Falls and is buried next to Gustaf, her first husband. Headstone dates: 1854-1921. When Gustaf died in 1892 she married his brother Emanuel.

Per Lois Almquist Schiebel's document "An Account of the Amquists, An Epic of Elm Twigs" her maiden name was Benjaminson. Amy and Susan Eliason believe that may be wrong.

No record of her in the vital records of Polk or Burnett Counties.

Surname on John Robert's DC is Benson in Epic of Elm Twigs it is Benjaminson in her marriage record with Emanuel it is Anders Dotter, her father Anders A. Bingtson & her mother Brita J. Johans dotter. in her marriage record with Gustaf she is listed as Anna Johanna [Andersdr] or at least it looks like that.

When a man and a woman got married the woman never adopted her husband's patronymic name - a name ending with "son". A woman could never be someone's son. If they both had a family name, the woman still kept her family name. If the husband had a family name and the woman a patronymic name she might change her last name to her husbands family name. But it was not very likely to occur before the 1800's. It did not become a custom for a woman to adopt her husband's surname until the end of the 1800's, when most families had adopted family names.

4 born in Scandinavia: Gustaf Eric, Anna Johanna, Alma Sofia and Potencia Suafer.
Males are probably Gustaf, John Robert, Carl Julius and perhaps a son who did not live. (in the 1900 US Census Anna stated that she had given birth to 9 children but I am only aware of 7).
Females would be Anna Johanna, Alma Sofia and Potencia Suafer.

Their parents also. States that Anna had 9 children but only 2 were living (which does not make sense since 5 children were listed here). Makes me wonder if these were all her children. Emanual was married 6 years and Anna listed 17 but it was crossed out to 6 years. Perhaps that is how long she had been married to Emanual and his brother Gustaf (her previous husband), who died, combined. Emanual immigrated 1869. # of years in US lists 81-impossible. Na
He is a farmer she is a housewife, John was a laborer. All could read and write English except Clara. All could speak English except Clara and Anna.
  16. immigration for Emanuel shows 1869 na-for Anna 1884. They have been married 16 years and she has given birth 9 times and has had 7 children.
Occupations-Emanuel,farmer Carl and Axel are listed as laborers.
  17.   Notes taken from Dop-Bok 4 July 1884-1887. Author was probably Rev. Gustaf Andersson Wahlund, Lutheran Pastor.
  18.   On this record there are lines through the date of birth, Mother and marriage status. Even the numbering of births is crossed through. Under her name is (2 b. y. 2 h).
There is a bracket containing her parents and noted is 3 1/2 A. Fathers age is hard to read, might be 36 and it is also crossed through. There are also words that I cannot read in a column at the end. I cannot define that column with the tools I have available now.
  19.   After Alma Sofia's name is (1) probably denoting the first child. After Gustaf is Tranabo-might mean Crane operator since Trana is crane.
  20.   DOB 25 Feb. 1883, he was 87 years old. Occ. is listed as a farmer. SSN-388-16-6259A. Father is Gustaf Almquist, Mother is Ann Benson. Informant is Ed Almquist Bx 10, Rt 1, Siren, Wisconsin. Cause is Myocardial Insufficiency, with Arteriosclerotic Heart Disease (20 years) & Generalized Arteriosclerosis (30 Years). Also listed is Senility.
He was buried 10 Aug. 1970 in Lewis Cemetery.

His mother is listed as Anna Benson-I show her name to be Anna Johanna Andersdatter. I believe that this last name of Benson is a shortened version of Anna's father's last name Bengtson. Using this name in the tradition of America instead of the patronymic naming convention used in Sweden. ASSUMPTION
  21.   It looks like Gustaf has returned to bring the family back to America with him.
Looks like Gustaf was born in Vessige, Anna & Alma in Ullared and Tessie in Stafsinge. (Not sure about Alma's place of birth.)
Also not sure about date that Anna was born-month and year are clear but not the date.
  22. Anders Aron Bengtsson, his wife Brita Johanna Johansdotter, their sons Carl Johan, Per Johan & Johan Albon, their daugther Anna Johanna Andersdr with her husband Gustaf Almquist with their daughter Alma Sofia. Bengt Andersson, his wife Edla Nilsdotter and their son Peter Andersson. Also Annika Nilsdotter who may be Edla's sister plus more people I don't yet know.
  23. On Anna and Gustaf's wedding record there is this place after her name. Tranabo is the place where she came from, the Gård. English translation is farm or estate.
  24. Gustaf came first in 1877 then returned to bring back Anna and the daughters. In 1880 he was 33 and Anna was 25, Alma Sofia was 3 and Potentia Suafer was an infant of 5 mos. on 21st November when they left.
