Wedding announcement and comment contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha:
The Newtown Register, Thursday, January 4, 1877, Page 5, Column 5:
MARRIED:
ROSEMON—JACKSON—On Monday evening, December 25, by the Rev. Alexander Graham, Cornelius P. Rosemon of N. Y. city, to Alice, daughter of Colonel Downing Jackson of Astoria, L. I.
- I assume that the original dispatch was handwritten, and that someone misinterpreted “Coe Downing Jackson” as “Col. Downing Jackson”; hence the erroneous listing of her father as “Colonel Downing Jackson”.
There is a strong possibility that Alice is the same daughter recorded in the 1860 & 1870 censuses as Sarah E. Jackson. Alice is not shown in those census records and Sarah E. is not shown in records after 1870. In 1900 Alice gives her birth date as January 1853; Sarah E.'s estimated birth year from the 1860 and 1870 censuses is about 1853. They could be two different daughters but it is strange that Alice does not show up until 1880 when she has married to Cornelius Rosemon. Alice is proved a daughter later by administration documents as she shares equally with Coe's other children in the estate of her Aunt Fannie Marie Duryea Brewer. In 1900 Emma, a daughter of Coe and his wife, shows as a sister-in-law living with Cornelius Roseman and his wife Alice.
