Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:


  • Page 44.--19th August, 1765. John Willey (Wiley) to Peter and Alex. Wiley, sons of John, £200, 400 acres on New River, Francis Riley's line. Delivered: Pat. Lockhart, September, 1772.


Disposition of Land in Augusta County:


  • Alexander Wiley sold (some or all of the land acquired on New River in 1765) land to Andrew McCartney, prior to 21 June 1791, (as listed in the record below of Margaret Wylie relinquishing dower in deed to Andrew McCartney).


Will of Alexander Wiley

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF ALEXANDER WILEY

In the name of God, Amen this twenty first day of November, one thousand eight hundred twenty two, I, Alexander Wiley being advanced in years and weak in body but of sound mind, memory and understanding calling to mind the mortality of my body, and that it is appointed for all men once to die, do see cause to make this my last Will and Testament, that is to say I commend my soul to Almighty God, and my body to the grave to be buried in a Christian like manner at the discretion of my wife and Executors; and what worldly good the Lord helped me with in this life.
I dispose of the same in the following manner and form that is to say: It is my will and I do ordain that all my lawful debts funeral expenses and Doctor's charges if any there be shall be paid and lawfully discharged; I will and bequeath unto my dear and loving wife, all my cleared land. All my Plantation tools, with exceptions my wagon and gears the loom, all the grain that is on the place growed and growing the Croper's share excepted with all the hay to for use and benefit, her choice two of my two horses, her choice two of my cows, and what part one pleasure to keep, of my sheep and hogs, all my household furniture during her life, and all house pleasures and no part of her legacy shall be praised.
I will and bequeath unto my grandson Alexander Shockey all the land that I have on the East side of little river, and my large bible and rifle guns, and if he should die before he is lawful age the land shall belong to his brother Preston, and if both should die under age the land is be my daughter's Polly Shockey, during her life.
I will and bequeath unto my son James Wiley one hundred and fifty acres, of the land I have on the West side of little river joining the land Mr. Garaunt to begin at Reed's line and of that end next to said Garaunt land to have his hundred and fifty acres, and he may improve it as he pleases but shall no dispose of it during my wife's lifetime.
I will and bequeath unto my grandson Andrew Wiley and my son Robert Wiley the balance of my land on the West side of river after my wife's decrease, and if the Andrew Wiley should die before he is of lawful age and the land to revert to my son Robert Wiley; I will unto my daughter Polly Shockey thirty dollars.
I will unto my other five children that is John Wiley, Alexander Wiley, Ann Huff, Jane Wiley and Sally Wiley twenty shillings each.
It is my will that the balance of my stock still and still tubs, Kegs and apple mill shall be sold to the highest bidder and the price to pay the above legacies and the balance if any there be to be paid to my wife to dispose of as she sees proper I do nominate and appoint my trusty and good friends John Geraunt and Henry Shockey to be the Executors of this my Last Will and Testament in Witness Whereof I set my hand and seal the day and year above written, signed and acknowledged in the presence of:
